Book Description
"Let's eat out!" Minnesotans have always loved to, in the opulent dining rooms of fancy hotels, in piney resort halls, or in standard around-the-corner cafes, where the food is hot and plentiful. And the best of these eateries inspire cherished memories of fabulous food and charming camaraderie. Minnesota Eats Out is a virtual romp through the state's dining spots, from early health resorts to Prohibition-era speakeasies to A&W drive-ins, illustrated with nearly one thousand photographs, postcards, menus, matchbooks, and collectible dishes. Kathryn Strand Koutsky and Linda Koutsky narrate the history of dining in the North Star State, highlighting innovative foods, inspired restaurant architecture, and cutting-edge graphic design, along with anecdotes about beloved restaurants remembered through the decades. Accompanying this rich history is a priceless collection of recipes for dishes made famous through the years, like the pioneers' Indian Pudding and old favorites from Eibner's Bakery in New Ulm or Ruttger's Resort in Brainerd. Eleanor Ostman revised these recipes for preparation in modern kitchens. Embellished with photographs of historic restaurants, collectible tableware, and restaurant ephemera, the recipes invite today's readers to re-create cherished food memories. Minnesota Eats Out, a one-of-a-kind venture into the state's history, serves up over a century of fine and fun Minnesota dining.

This 2003 book, published by the Minnesota Historical Society, is a celebration of all the ways Minnesotans have eaten out since it became a state. Everything from stagecoach inns and frontier hotels to five-star hotels and super supper clubs. The oldest for which the Society could find documentation was in 1858. They had to pick some cut-off date, and decided to stop in the 1960's.Even the Sixties are like ancient history now. How about these changing prices for a "complete roast beef dinner": 1880 35 cents, 1900 60 cents, 1920 $1.00, 1940 $1.50 and 1960 $5.00.Where possible, they tried to get original recipes, and some are included in the book. Every two-page spread has many photos. You get stories, quotes and history. Many of the restaurants, cafeterias and soda fountains are no longer around. Some locations have gone through several permutations as different restaurants. One that is still around is Betty's Pies, north of Two Harbors. I grew up on the North Shore of Lake Superior, and I remember this roadside restaurant well. And it is still going strong. An enjoyable walk down memory lane. I'll end with this quote by George Miller:"The trouble with eating Italian food is that five or six days later you're hungry again."Happy Reader
The design is annoying. I am particularly interested in seeing the menus from the restaurants. The layout covers up parts of them frequently. Also some photos are too small. Less art and more fact, please. Please publish another book of just full menus and recipes, that way we can know what was served and eaten.
Excellent reference book--fun nostalgia and recipes to boot!
Not what i thought it would be, very few recipes and not much variety of recipes. History of places more than a recipe book
Promt service and a beautiful copy! I am delighted with the purchase!
This is a wonderful book. As a former resident of MN, it was a great insight into the history of many of the establishments we visited when we lived in the Metro area. Plus the recipes that I have tried are very good.
Charming history of great places we ate and enjoyed many, many years ago.
Fellow Minnesota oldsters and yuppies alike will have a ball browsing through this lovely coffee table book of the historic eateries in our home state. I was delighted to find a photo of the menu for my Dad's Minneapolis restaurant, the 620 Club, which he owned and operated with partners Max & Henry Winter from 1935 to 1965. (Max and Dad had been among the partners in the Minneapolis Lakers basketball team, and Max went on to found the Minnesota Vikings.) And then there was Charlie's Cafe Exceptionale. Ohhhh, how I miss Charlie's! Chuck Saunders' chef, Russian emigre Harry Walkowitz, also headed up the 620's kitchen for a number of years both before and after his stint at Charlie's. No wonder the food was so good at both places. Harry's secret: "I use lots of booouuter."
