I bought this book as I was writing an Episcopal mass using contemporary music. The standard Anglican mass is filled with technical terms which the average parishioner will glide by without giving them a second thought. Even the title of the 'Book of Common Prayer" uses the word "Common" in a technical sense, meaning those elements of a service which do not change from week to week. In contrast to "Common" are "Propers", which change to fit the season or the saint whose day is being celebrated, or most especially with the seven major festivals of the year.Appropriate to the title of the book, its subject is not limited to matters relating to the Episcopal church. Matters arising out of both Catholic and Protestant sources are covered thoroughly. Unlike many dictionaries, it may be worth your while to read the book from cover to cover, at least to skim through it, reading every entry subject, and reading the entire entry when it interests you. You may wonder why the entry for "'The Feast of Corpus Christie" is so long. This is a Eucharist observed to celebrate the origins of the Eucharist, and it did not start on the year after Jesus died. Rather, it became popular in the 13th century.This book lacks one item essential to a really good Kindle reference book. It has no links from one entry to another, when one has a reference to an item related to the article you are reading. It would have been useful, for example, to have links between "Creed" and the three major creeds, the Nicene, the Apostles, and the Athanasian creeds. On the other hand, the Bibliography at the end of the book is generous, and not weighted down too much with excessively technical works. It would have been a boon if book references had been included in individual articles.I have yet to find a subject for which there is inadequate coverage, or no coverage.
I am new to deeper theological study. I needed a good reference for better understanding of theological language. My priest recommended this book and I have found it very helpful. Worth the full price but I was really glad to find a used copy in such good condition. Thank you Amazon.
