A brilliant discussion by a major sociological thinker. One of the masterful features of Becker's work is that he is the rare sociologist who can explore difficult issues in a straightforward way. He is also a fine and funny writer. This is a good book for those non-sociologists who would like to learn something about how sociology, at its best, can illuminate human behavior.

Becker offers a framework for thinking about and making sense of the world that embraces its nuances and complexities. Sorry I didn't get the hard copy to put in my library as a ready reference piece for clear headed reasoning.
A little heavy at times, but an unusual and worthwhile point of view.
Not very well written
Professor Becker is rightfully proud of his sociological accomplishments and he tells you all about them in his work on the medical profession, art and crime. He credits sociology with making us aware of just what society is all about and stacks its value against philosophy and the humanities. In truth, there is value in all three but I would put sociology at a poor third. Sociology challenges intuition but intuition rules our lives and all the Beckers in the world cannot keep up with the challenges and judgments we face every day without having to put an army of post docs to work checking them out. What about that Mr. Becker?
Duller and more badly written than I'd thought it would be.
Loved the title but would have liked to read more about those particular "cases."
