This book is not very technical. It is all about planning before you execute. The first part of the book (chapter 2-12) is called "Planning".The second part (chapter 13-20) is called "Optimizing", but I would instead call it "Planning your optimization strategy".Although there is a lot of detail here (and it is all good), the book falls short when it comes to actually creating an overall adoption plan. There are many smaller processes (some meant to be cyclical) detailed throughout the book, but nothing drawing all the material together in a cohesive, overall plan of attack. If you are starting your path to SharePoint adoption, my suggestion would be to read this book from cover to cover, and take good notes. It really is essential material if you want to plan and avoid re-doing things later (a SharePoint site that is improperly implemented/used is no better than what you are currently using.) Use your notes as a cheat sheet/summary of the book, and refer back to the book for detailed guidance when appropriate. Also, go to success.office.com and formulate a high-level plan based on that site (define a vision, Id business scenarios, prioritize solutions, commit resources and execute, then measure/share success/iterate). Fill in the details with information from this book. Once you have your overall plan, do yourself a favor and hire a consulting firm to help realize your vision, it will be money well spent.

I have been using this excellent resource for an ECM project with the government. The book is a one stop shop for understanding SharePoint 2013 from business solution perspective. However, what if you were just asked to put together an ECM solution and you have no idea what ECM is? In this case, you must start with books which explain Information Architecture in general, who does it, how do they do it, what skills are required. This is not that book. After learning about information architecture in general, if your tool platform is SharePoint 2013, then come back to this book which covers everything you need to implement an ECM solution in SharePoint 2013.

This is NOT a technical book. If you have any general knowledge of SharePoint or if you are already a power user, SharePoint professional of any kind this is NOT the book for you. This book would help you if you are responsible for gathering requirements as it will educate you on the fundamentals of SharePoint and allow you to speak intelligently to your clients as well as have a general understanding of what a developer or architect may need.

I needed something more advanced and less essential. I would not purchase it if I had a "do over". I have used SP since it's initial launch. Features change and disappear. A good, how-to advanced reference would have been preferable. Since we do not have a SP test site, trying out new features and learning impacts all users.

This is one of those books where it is painfully obvious that the author was paid by the word quota. There are whole paragraphs that really don't say anything meaningful.

Having seen all three authors speak at various forums, I had no doubt this would be a good all-star treatment of the material. What's interesting is the degree to which they cover the "meta" topics so well - things I've been telling customers for years that seem to still be missing in the SharePoint customer base. Very well articulated. Supports the reality that better strategy, planning and business alignment balanced with the right level of technical knowledge will go a long way towards customers getting the remaining 80% of value out of the platform. Great job.

As a Microsoft v-TSP and Solution Architect for a SharePoint consulting firm this book is exactly what I needed to wrap my arms around what is new with SharePoint 2013 and how to practically apply the concepts. I would recommend this book to anyone considering using or developing solutions with SharePoint 2013!

Very well written
