Shanower won 2001's Will Eisner Comics Industry Award for Best Writer/Artist for this extraordinary project: the first part of a seven-volume graphic novel about the Trojan War. He has researched every imaginable source about the war, from ancient legends to medieval romances to contemporary scholarship, and synthesized them into a fantastically rich narrative. He's also delved deep into the architectural history of Mycenaean Greece, so that the dress and settings in the book look like Bronze Age artifacts, rather than the Classical Greek styles normally associated with the story. The book begins with the story of Paris, the milk-white bull and the kidnapping of Helen, and goes up to the start of the war Shanower still has a ways to travel before touching the material of the Iliad. He treats the material as historical fiction rather than mythology, as a tale of people, not of gods, though the supernatural aspects of the story are worked in through dreams and visions. Shanower subtly alters his visual style for every flashback sequence: when Priam relates the story of Herakles, the images are cartoonish and the characters larger than life. His dialogue is formal but not florid, and the narrative flow is clear and simple. But the story also has many amazing scenes for an artist the erotic entanglement of Achilles and Deidamia, the feigned madness of Odysseus, the launching of the thousand ships to rescue Helen and lay waste to Troy and Shanower makes the most of them, with a fine-lined style in black and white drawings evoking woodcuts and classical paintings. I bought the first three in this series for my 6th grader who is dyslexic. She finds graphic novels a great format. She received these in her care package at camp and they were a big hit in the unit. Mostly girls receive gossip magazines and these novels were much more popular and a much better content. These tie into the 6th grade history social studies standard with Ancient Greece. By the end of 6th grade most kids have been introduced to Greek mythology and are ready for this series, which is adult in nature but this age group is now seeking more adult content in their reading and viewing material. I would much rather this then Teen Vogue or Seventeen magazine. All I can say is a group of 11 girls who just finished 6th grade loved these. Now I just need to find something to send next year to camp.
I just ripped through A Thousand Ships and Sacrifice in two days and I'm bowled over. What a tour de force these books are. Shanower seamlessly incorporates all the myths entwined in the Trojan War. An incredible feat by itself, it's even more impressive because he achieves this without bogging down what is, after all, a ripping good story.In the course of the book, Shanower offers some interesting insights on some of the more puzzling and disturbing events (Iphigenia's sacrifice comes to mind). I also was impressed by how he developed the characters. For instance, he convincingly portrays Odysseus changing from a clever Trojan War draft-dodger to a gung-ho warrior by the end of the second book.I can't wait for Shanower's next book in the series. Until then, I'm pressing these books on everyone I know. They're THAT good. Bravo!
Spectacular!This is the 1st volume in the series. It starts with Paris coming home to Troy and his abduction of Helen, and then Agamemnon who calls on the Achaean kings, bound by their oaths, to get her back. A lot about Achilles too. It ends with them setting off from Aulis to begin the epic war.This is a must for Trojan War enthusiasts. From homer to Shakespeare, you have a single story of Troy and Shanover also draws on archeology to present the Achaean and Trojan cultures as they really were. Parents might want to preview it for the kids as there is some nudity.Highly recommended!
I know the story well enough, through the many books on ancient Greeks at my grandfathers house, although I've never read Homer.This rendition is mind-blowing. The amount of detail and research done by Mr. Shanower is the reason one has to wait a couple of years between each hard bound edition. I can think of few better ways of engaging younger readers in the classical world than this series.Seriously, this is the longest I've thought out my entertainment life. I just want to be alive when all 7 volumes are completed in trade cloth. It's similar to getting hooked on Tintin as a kid, if that helps you get the feeling, although the artwork is obviously different.Finally, this is the first graphic novel that made me cry for the fate of a character. It's that "real."
Eric Shanower's "Sacrifice" is a strong sequel to "A Thousand Ships," continuing the saga of the Trojan War. Shanower pulls no punches with the characters as he brings Agamemnon's daughter Iphigenia to meet her fate at Aulis.Students of the period will enjoy the historical accuracy of his artwork in terms of architecture, weaponry, and costume - often bringing to mind specific artifacts. (The stylized makeup worn by the priestess Thetis, mother of Achilles, is just one of many excellent examples I could cite.)Shanower weaves together the disparate pieces of the myth into an engaging, compelling whole. A most enjoyable read - I can hardly wait for the next installment!
fantastically written and illustrated, with so much nuance and humanity added to a very complex, dense story. what a labor of love. (also, there is a very tense section near the end and i actually had to put the book down and walk away for a couple days.) excited to read volume 3.
This attempt to bring every thread of the Trojan War saga into one continuous narrative is an amazing effort. Shanower is delivering an excellent opus which is well written and illustrated. As a Latin/Greek teacher I appreciate his sense of duty and pietas.I know one else who has attempted this undertaking.
