About the Author
John MacArthur is the pastor-teacher of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, where he has served since 1969. What the fictitious Screwtape feared the most was `mere Christianity.' To it he wanted to contaminate with his concoction of `Christianity And.' As long as believers are convinced that `The Same Old Thing' was insufficient for true satisfaction, they would look for supplementary idols to fill their vacuum that only Christ can legitimately fill. And so the search is on. Instead of looking where the answers lie, Christians choose to look elsewhere for alternatives. But the alternates, by their very nature, are inadequate substitutes. MacArthur's thesis is that by denying the absolute sufficiency in all things spiritual that we have in Christ, we have embraced misleading, unsatisfactory, counterfeit and ultimately spiritually harmful surrogates. (pp. 15ff)We have embraced the modern promotion of psychology, even in its evil step-daughter Christian psychology. We have sought after `how-to' philosophies of pragmatism; mysticism's Deeper Life and Charismatic offshoots; materialistic hedonism's siren of "have the best of both worlds"; legalism's do-it-yourself sanctification; asceticism's deny-every-creature-comfort to become spiritual; Quietism's passivity; Pietism's strenuous activity among other feeble attempts to add to our salvation that which only Jesus can provide. In contrast, MacArthur reminds us of the beautiful balance (Phil 2:12,13) we have in the Divine/Human cooperative of His sovereignty and our responsibility in the area of our progressive sanctification.MacArthur's position is that Christ's power and person has provided perfect sufficiency for everything pertaining to life and godliness (2 Pet 1:3; Col 2:8,9). Dr. MacArthur provides an excellent teaching on the sufficiency of Christ and His word and will bring it's reader excitement, confidence, hope and joy in knowing that God's word found in the pages of the Bible speak to every spiritual condition, and God's word alone offers true hope and understanding of the things concerning the immaterial consciousness of man. Dr. MacArthur provides a sound apologetic against the presuppositions of modern psychology which are rooted in humanistic naturalism. I am thankful to God's Holy Spirit and His work in men like John MacArthur!
Pastor Macarthur describes the most dangerous problem Christianity faces today, that is putting our Lord Jesus aside. It is a warning for us Christians not to be fooled by what the world has been offering us instead of finding what is required from us in Christ. Psychology is an area that is growing steadfastly in church these days and we, Christians, are not paying attention to the consequences of that. This is one of many topics Pastor Macarthur, brilliantly, expounds in this great book. It is,definitely , a must read!
John MacAuther is one of the best Christian teacher out there. Buy everyone of his books and you will be enriched by Jesus' truth.
Mac Arthur very clearly presents the need to be God focused in life and that secular psychology does not offer the all sufficient hope that we have have in Christ. He does so without focusing unduly on others ideas but simply points the reader back to Christ!

A must read for every Christian. Ive read this several times because its that good.
As relevant today as when it was written...perhaps more so. It is a must read for all Christians to better understand their riches in Christ.
