I had a very hard time with this book even though I wanted to love it because of it's message. Maybe I was expecting more of an interesting read, but this book is written very much like a history, fact after fact after fact.
I was looking for a biography to read for a book challenge at work. I searched Irish Biographies and this came up. I had never heard of Mary Elmes and was intrigued. What an amazing woman! She never looked for any recognition for what she did. After the war she went about her life as though none of it happened. Fortunately, there were people who remembered.
Clodagh Finn's A Time to Risk All: The incredible untold story of Mary Elmes, is an inspiring story of courage and heroism. This biographical work tells a story of an extraordinary Irish woman, impaled between two of the worst wars in recent history: the Spanish Civil War (1936 - 1939) and the Second World War (1939 - 1945). With profound insight into the trauma experienced by the Spanish, the horrendous journey into their newly adopted county, France, and their subsequent internment in a flea and rat infested camp, Finn captures the life of the Spanish refugees, and the character of a woman who brought a funnel of light to these wretched people's lives during the dark years of starvation and depraved living conditions. When she realized that the Jews were being singled out for extermination, Mary Elems organized the escape of possibly hundreds of "her children". When her organization, the Quakers, asked her to leave France, she refused and was imprisoned in one of the most notorious Nazi prisons in France. She survived the two wars, saved hundreds of Jews, built schools and workshops in the camps. This book is a window into the deep desires of the human being to rise above both the power and pettiness of political ideology. It shows how an ordinary woman can do extraordinary deeds. How humanity's love for each other is more powerful than hate. As we immerse ourselves in a time of the anti-hero and petty politics, I highly recommend reading a book that will give you the courage to once again seek the hero inside.
I genuinely wanted to enjoy this book. I agree it’s well written, however there is far too much pre-amble, far too much detail on incidental matters and far too much detail on irrelevant points. It’s a chore to get through. Perhaps if the title and the description were more accurate, the reader would not be disappointed.
