I love this series. I'm half way through hellifax right now. I saw this pre book but was saddened it wasn't audioðŸ˜ΕΎ. So I went old fashioned and read it 😉. I cannot wait for the last book because Gus is not in hellifax but his friend Scott is. I'm wondering now if Annie owns that farm that you will read later. I hope Gus gets a happy ending in the end with a wife or girlfriend and kids somehow. He is a character you would love to hang out with. The audio's are great if you get them. I listen at work and time flies. Also love the humor in this series where the whole zombie thing is serious.
I've read all of Mountain Man series of books, and they are all very good reads. You can read this prequel before the first published Mountain Man book, or not, it won't dilute the reading experience either way. Blackmore is good at character development, which is always a GREAT quality to find in writers, not many can do it well. He is especially good with dialogue, and he accentuates the development in his characters with it. You see this done in this book particularly well, what I would call "bro dialogue" - a bantering exchange between two men (usually young guys) where they rib, prod and shock each other with witty comments and stories. He manages to do this without breaking the pace of the story. Dialogue is well done in all Blackmore's books but this one is a good example. This story follows a good pace and keeps the reader interested, and differs from the other stories as it takes place at least partially in a pre-apocalyptic period. I enjoyed this book, as I have all the Mountain Man books.
I thought the series was over. So it was a wonderful surprise to see Gus Berry back for another round (Prequel) of Mountain Man.As I have come to expect from Keith, this was a great read and had it all - funny, gore, violence and bad language - not rude, but is used to add to the character's Personality and funny banter. It was also nice to get a glimpse into Gus before it all hits the fan.Sad to see that this is the final installment because HANDS DOWN, THIS IS THE BEST SERIES IN THIS GENRE!I only wish I had recently found it and was starting it.Thanks for the wonderful series Keith. I look forward to reading more in this genre and others from you.
I was like a kid at Christmas upon starting this book. It was wonderful to get to see Gus at a time in his life when he was happy with a bright future. The wit and humor within the dialogue is why I think Keith Blackmore has become the writer I keep an eye for to see what he releases next .
Great and disappointed the ride is over...time to go back to the Breed series (Also great BTW). Keith, please crank out another horror book before the holidays. Keith has quickly become one of my favorite authors. The thrills are always good, but Keith's ability to give his characters life is what really stands out. For those who haven't heard of MM series, I'm envious of the discovery you are about to make. You are in for a treat!
This was a great way to say goodbye to a favorite series of mine. We get to see the framework for the character that Gus later becomes. As with all of Blackmore's books, I wish it was a lot longer. If you are thinking of starting the Mountain Man series or just want to know what Blackmore is all about I would still suggest starting with Mountain Man (the finest zombie fiction ever written) , then backing up to this. Then moving forward again in the series. Then know that I'm very jealous that you are just starting out with this rather than having to say goodbye to it.
I really like Mr. Blackmore's style. I like that his characters are real (overweight, older, out of shape, not-subject experts) and that how they react to the unusual circumstances is what makes the story come alive. A nosey SJW threatening to "report you" for abusing a zombie and protecting HER! - c'mon, that is just good current cultural / modern day observation. If you haven't read any of the Mountain Man books, heed the authors advice and start with this prequel. If you read the other books you'll probably like this one as well.I'm looking forward to new Blackmore stories.
I thought the whole Mountain Man series rocked and it was nice to get a prequel that explained a few bits of the storyline and how Gus ended up where he did. This dystopian series surprised me because as a woman, I didn't think I'd be able to stand some of the more brutal scenes in the book - and the series does get brutal.. Blackmore does a good job on getting you to cheer for the good guys and boo for the bad. There were a few characters that I really wanted to see meet their demise!
