About the Author
Robert Slater and his wife, Elinor Slater, are coauthors of the highly popular Great Jewish Women and Great Jewish Men. Robert Slater was a reporter in the Time magazine Jerusalem Bureau from 1976 to 1996. He is also the author of Great Jews in Sports, Rabin of Israel, and Golda: The Uncrowned Queen of Israel. Elinor Slater has worked for the Hebrew University of Jerusalem as the coordinator for U.S.-sponsored research programs since 1982. She has helped in the editing of all her husband's books and is active in the Israel Women's Network. Elinor Slater, born in the United States in 1944, and Robert Slater, born in the United States in 1943, have been married since 1966. In 1971 they moved to Jerusalem, where they continue to make their home. The Slaters have three children, all of whom live in Israel.

This was a book i purchased for a Bar Mitzvah gift. I find the price excellent for this hard-bound classic, book, and it was so easy to find it, quick delivery with Amazon Prime.
Very informative, well layout. Great for the man who has everything. My dad was thrilled. There are many others in the series.
A good book to read for relaxation. Many an interesting description of important personalities abound. Some of the great ones like Maimonides, Moses, Chaim Weizmann are discussed. One thing I take issue with is that there is a preponderance of liberal figures over conservative ones. It lists people like Walter Lippmann (a self-hating Jew) and Norman Mailer (a Non-Jewish Jew) who stands for the opposite of Jewish Values while excludes people like Irving Kristol (the intellectual author of the Gingrich and Reagan revolution) or Ayn Rand both of whom are more prominent on the other wing. Other people worth including are Milton Steinberg (a leading philosophical and literary voice), Emanuel Lasker (Chess champion and one of the greatest Jewish minds), Bernard Malamud (a Pulitzer Prize-winning author), Edward Teller (one of the greatest scientific minds of the century), Vladimir Jabotinsky (A great literary voice and important Zionist intellectual. He deserved an actual description rather than brief mention) and David Oistrakh (a leading Soviet Violinist).
This work contains biographical portraits of some of the most important figures in Jewish history. The book is written with a clear factual tone, and provides accurate information on the entries. It is a kind of short encyclopedia and I believe an excellent educational tool in the Jewish people's struggle to deal with their own ignorance about themselves and their history.I suppose one element of reading such works is a certain ' pride ' if one is Jewish at knowing that one is somehow connected , belongs to the same people as the distinguished person in question.I think the authors were wise in choosing people whose actions are generally considered valuable contributions to the Jewish people and mankind as a whole.This work should be of real pleasure to anyone who takes interest in Jewish culture and history.
Where's Benjamin Disraeli, Jewish born 19th century PM of Great Britain? And artist Modigliani's profile, why is it so downbeat? Also, where is Primo Levi and why is he missing? Lastly, Moses Montefiore belongs in the main section and deserves more than a petty thumbnail sketch.
This book is an excellent book. It covers information about many different men who have played important roles in Judaism, from Abraham to David Ben Gurion. The book is good if you are looking for a 2-3 page biography and certain highlights of a person's career, but could not be used as an only reference for a research project.Overall, the Slaters have created a good book documenting important aspects of Jewish history.
