When I first began keeping honey bees, The Beekeeper's Handbook, Third Edition was one of two books on beekeeping that I purchased. This particular book is easy to read, and it provides excellent visuals. It also has an intuitive layout for finding what you need. I'm three years into the wonderful world of apiculture and this book is pulled off the shelf several times throughout the season to aid me along the way e.g. "when should I reverse my hives, and which method should I use?" or I'm thinking of making my own nucs this year, so I'm going to see what the authors have to say on this subject.In summary, this book is worth the extra money--you will use it for years to come. I read previous reviews on this book here on Amazon prior to purchasing where "experienced" beekeeper felt this book to be very informative and also read where this was good for beginners....ALL true; just by flipping thru the book it is: easy to understand, well written, very detailed of how to get started taking you thru the entire process of bees/honey. HIGHLY recommend this book! Came quickly as well.
It may be a matter of personal taste but this is the first book on this topic which gives me a feeling of being able to access bee-keeping. It seems to strip away the lore and mystery which have always accompanied bee-keeping. For the record I have yet execute the plan to acquire bees for honey. At least this books makes me feel more like it is something I can do.
I have been thinking about getting into beekeeping, but I wasn't sure how to go about it. This handbook takes all the guess work out of the process. It is very informative and gives you step by step instructions on how to be a successful beekeeper. After reading this book, I will place my order for equipment and give it a try. I feel confident that the first year will be successful while using this wonderful handbook.
I bought this book on the strength of previous reviews and it has certainly been a worthwhile purchase. Working with bees here in Japan this, among all of the books I have, is the first point of reference when I come across something which I don't understand or haven't seen before. If I was forced to choose one reference for beekeeping and give up all of the rest, this would be the one.The physical format of the book makes it a little difficult to tote around as commuter reading and, while the illustrations are well drawn and quite clear, it would still benefit from some photographs (see "Keeping Bees And Making Honey" by Benjamin and McCallum for a complementary volume to this, which will captivate anyone with the slightest interest in beekeeping). Despite those minor drawbacks, this is still a five-star choice and a "must-have" for beekeepers.
I am new to beekeeping and this book was recommended by a long time beekeeper. Loads of information here and an invaluable reference book to keep on hand. Careful with which bee books you purchase, especially the age of the book. Bee scence is ever changing and new diseases and pests have been making appearances. Get this one, and Beekeeping for Dummies is another good book.
Buy it! It's the best book you will find. I have a dozen or so bee books and this is the only one I refer back to.
