From Booklist
The title says it all. It’s from the New Yorker! It’s about dogs! It has a foreward by hot author Malcolm Gladwell (Outliers, 2008)! And, of course, it has wonderful cartoons! This marvelous collection of essays, stories, short humor pieces, drawings, poems—and cartoons—could not have come from any other source but the New Yorker. What other publication has enough good stuff in the vaults to begin each section (“Good Dogs,†“Bad Dogs,†“Top Dogs,†and “Underdogsâ€) with a piece by James Thurber? Also included are such tidbits as a Roald Dahl story about an attempted fiddle at a greyhound race; Susan Orlean on Rin Tin Tin; Ogden Nash’s ode “For a Good Dogâ€; a piece on dog whisperer Cesar Millan by Gladwell; an Arthur Miller coming-of-age story involving sex and a puppy; and Anne Sexton’s poem on having to love her beloved’s old dog. Scattered throughout are doggy magazine covers, artwork, photographs, and the iconic cartoons. A must-have. --Nancy Bent

“The title says it all. It’s from the New Yorker! It’s about dogs! . . . And, of course, it has wonderful cartoons. . . . Marvelous . . . A must-have.”—Booklist“Do you have a dog lover in your family or circle of friends? Do you need to get them a holiday gift? Look no further. The Big New Yorker Book of Dogs is a terrific book. . . . Big in dimension, quantity and quality.”—Forbes.com“I usually hate anthologies. . . . But this one works triumphantly. . . . Above all it works because there is tremendous writing. Because of the amused insouciance, the self-deprecation, the gentle unfolding of a structural irony, the skip and reveal of the final sentence, the knowledge of Not Too Much that seems intrinsic to the New Yorker. And cartoons.”—Edmund De Waal, The Spectator

The editors seem to have included every story from The New Yorker in which a dog appears whether the story or essay has any reader appeal or not. In some cases the dog is incidental to the story. Other stories are really dated. More than a few of them are depressing. Some seem pointless (a news story about a drug-sniffing dog that slept too much). Others are irrelevant to anyone not living in New York (description of an ordinance forbidding dogs to bark for more than 10 minutes). Ho hum.I got the impression that the editors digitized all the content from the last 70 years, performed a search using the word "dog," and then plunked all the results into one indiscriminate volume.I also wondered about fact checking. I can understand the mistake of labeling Washoe (the chimp who learned sign language) a boy in the original article about Leona Helmsley. Things happen. But didn’t anyone notice the mistake the second time around?I thought I was getting a collection of carefully selected stories about dogs, reflective of the charm and wit I associate with this magazine. Not.
I am a sucker for most things that deal with dogs, and then add the New Yorker, makes for a witty, sly, funny combination. Everything in this book is sourced from the monumental material printed over the years from the New Yorker, a treasure trove of all things smart, funny, socially relevant. Some of the best cartoons on social commentary ever printed come from the New Yorker, and the best cartoons about dogs and our relationship with them. (My favourite cartoon is by Charles Addams, page 247, few are better than he.) It also contains wonderful essays by John Cheever, Ronald Dahl, Ogden Nash, Anne Sexton and many others. A great addition for any book lover, or gift for a dog lover, and if you are both, even better!
I've thoroughly enjoyed the short stories and cartoons in this book so I'm not going to ding it on content. But I do have a tip: don't get the Kindle version. It really doesn't lend itself very well to Kindle, it's more of a book to thumb through stopping here and there when something catches your eye. To really see the cartoons you'll need to use the Kindle app on a computer or iPad, they're not so great in small black & white. At this point I'm not going to spring for a hard copy but I'm really sorry I didn't get that in the first place.
Returning it. Sadly it does not contain the amount of New Yorker art as one would think but the main reason is that I refuse to have a book in the house that portrays Cesar Millan in a positive way when he is unqualified and abusive. He does not respect or bother to learn what professional animal behaviorists have learned about normal and abnormal behavior in dogs, like the Alpha theory that was revoked by the very scientists that created it and is completely rejected by scientists today.
A nice read before bedtime. Lots of short articles and stories about dogs. A few longer ones and some are sad, but most are fun with the quality of writing that you expect for the New Yorker.
Bought as a gift, but I read it first. You've got to really love dogs to enjoy this whole book, or maybe read a chapter here and there over the course of a few months, but it's all dog, and that's alot of dog!! Still, some very touching stuff, some just cute, others quite a stretch to be amusing and/or interesting. Older articles, which evidently were once the talk of the town, seem horribly dated (e.g. Thurber to me has always been a mystery.) But each to his own. If you adore dogs, you will at least enjoy most of this book.
great book, i bought it for christmas gifts for my college roommates to put in gift bags.Well it was pretty funny, not, ... lol...the books are huge! i could barely even carry six. They didn't make it in the gift bags, but everyone loved them none the less.
A wonderful collection of dog stories. You will meet Rex a noble dog, and Ava a wonderful three-legged dog. You will meet people who race dogs. Somewhere in here you might meet your own dog. I savored each story.
